Big Ten blues: Michigan not alone in hockey struggles – The Michigan Daily

Its no secret the Michigan hockey team is struggling. After opening the season ranked eighth in the nation, the Wolverines have stumbled to a 2-5 start, their worst in 28 years. After boasting four ranked teams earlier in the season, Minnesota is the only one remaining.

Penn State (5-1-2):

Last season’s cellar-dwellers generated plenty of momentum when it upset Michigan in last season’s Big Ten Tournament. That momentum has continued this season. While much of the Big Ten has struggled, Penn State has been a surprise starlet in its second season as a varsity program. Scoring three or more goals in all but one game, the Nittany Lions are third in the nation in scoring, and have made sure to treat their fans — which purchased all available season tickets in three minutes — to entertaining hockey.

After nearly doubling last season’s win total in the first month, Penn State will face its first real challenge when it travels to No. 6 UMass Lowell Nov. 14., but for now, life is good in State College.
