Big Ten power rankings: Badgers have new basis for belief

Friday’s one-off tangle at Niagara meant facing an Atlantic Hockey underdog that had yet to permit any fewer than three opposing goals in its first six ventures. On top of that, the Purple Eagles were starting freshman netminder Joe O’Brien — who, if you count the injured Jackson Teichroeb, is their third-stringer — for the first time.Yet the same case of frostbite that plagued the shot-happy Nittany Lions against St. Lawrence the weekend prior yielded worse results this time. They let a 1-0 deficit open despite firing off 25 shots of their own in the first 40 minutes. And only a conversion on their fifth and final power play with 3:01 to spare in regulation salvaged the eventual 1-1 draw.
