College Hockey News: Blog » Blog Archive » Big Ten: A Look Into Corsi, Week Four

Five Big Ten teams were in action this week, as the conference finished with a 5-4-1 record. Like last week, I calculated Corsi stats for total and 5-on-5 play in each period of each game, which are listed below. This week I also paid more attention to Corsi Close, so Corsi in close-score situations (when theres a one goal difference in the first two periods or when the game is tied).

Penn State vs. Bentley, 10/30/14 W, 3-2

In the opening frame, Bentley scored first on the power play. Penn State tied the game and took the lead by the end of the first period. For the frame, Penn States Corsi was 66.67 percent during 5-on-5 play. I calculated Corsi close in this game as play from the first period and into the second, until Penn State went ahead 3-1 in the second. Over that time, Penn States Corsi cloes for 5-on-5 play was 72 percent. Bentley scored to 3-2 in the third period, and after that goal Penn States 5-on-5 Corsi was 68 percent.

Penn State vs. Bentley, 10/31/14 W, 3-2

Bentley led Penn State 2-0 at the end of the period, so I calculated Penn States 5-on-5 Corsi up to Bentleys second goal. For that time frame, the Nittany Lions Corsi close was 42.86 percent. The Nittany Lions scored in the second to bring the score to 2-1. From that point to the end of the period, Penn States 5-on-5 Corsi was 47.06 (note: I didnt count the third period shots in that total, since games aretypically tied in the third to count as close-scoresituations).Penn State scored back-to-back goals in the third to take the lead, and its 5-on-5 Corsi for the frame was 70.27 percent.
