Penn State kicked off its 2013-2014 men’s hockey season at the first moment it was allowed: 12:00 a.m. on Oct. 5.

The program, entering its second at the Division-I level and first in the Big Ten conference, held a 30-minute practice session Saturday morning on the first day practice is allowed by the NCAA, and 500-1,000 fans showed up to watch it.
